Advocates play a role in supporting local mental health advocacy efforts, and may also be asked to testify at a hearing.

Minimum Age Requirement
Applicants must be 18 years or older
Volunteer Commitment
Volunteers are encouraged to commit for the length of 1 legislative session (December through March).

Advocacy Committee Chair
Schedule
3rd Monday of each month, 4:30–6:00pm
Location
Committee meetings take place at the NAMI Dane County office.
Responsibilities
- Attend monthly advocacy meetings (third Monday of each month, 4:30–6pm).
- Participate in the group (decide social justice issues to address, discuss community needs).
- Engage in actions to create positive change (e.g., calling congressmen, raising public awareness).
Requirements
- Passionate about working to see improvements in mental health services.
- Personal experience either having a mental illness or having a family member with a mental illness is helpful but not required. Advocates should be comfortable sharing their story and connecting it to a call to action.
- Complete NAMI Smarts for Advocacy training (1 day in person or via webinar).
- Attend monthly Advocacy Committee meetings.
